The principles of orbito-cranio-facial surgery in the treatment of congenital deformities were well esthablished by Paul Tessier at the beginning of 1970.
This kind of surgery carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality, so it should probably be considered a new and separate speciality, in magnitude to cardiac surgery or neurosurgery.
The Team Approach minimizes those risks so that the continuation of the concept of orbito-cranio-facial surgery can be justified.
In the preoperative investigation the Team is responsible for data collection, diagnosis and operative design and the Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgeon should lead the Team to the best performances.
The Team approach, finally, could facilitate investigation, improve planning, and diminish morbidity, mortality and cost.
Among the members of the Team there are: Cranio-Maxillo Facial Surgeon, Neurosurgeon, Anaesthetist, Ophtalmologist, Geneticist, Pediatrist, Neurologist, Neuroradiologist, Dentist and Orthodontist, Hematologist, Social Worker, Nursing, Medical Illustrator, Photo and Video Center.
